Laptops often have a utility where you can select how fast it will run in different modes (economy, battery, power etc). That should do the trick.

Also, is your cooling system working at full efficiency?

Check that your cooling fan and airway are not clogged with dust and fluff. (Don't run your laptop on a carpet, those long fibres are very clogful).

1) Check your air inlet, vacuum it if necessary.
If the inlet is under the laptop it often can get blocked by a soft blotter or thighs. The test is to listen to the fan tone - if it rises when you lift the laptop a little then you need more clearance around the inlet.
If your rubber feet have fallen off or were too thin to start with (not uncommon) you might not get enough air even on a hard surface.

2) Apply a vacuum cleaner to the laptop fan outlet while the fan is running at full speed to help suck dust out. Then switch off, wrap your lips around the fan outlet and blow - this produces a great penny-whistle sound from the fan and may loosen more dust. Suck it back out again.

3) Look for crud buildup on the leading edges of the fan blades - the tiniest amount makes quite a difference so wipe it off with a toothpick.

A hairdryer is also good for removing dust. Raise the whole laptop a little bit above the desk so that more air passes underneath. Do the fans sound normal?

If the cooling system is functioning correctly, you may wish to investigate thread master. I have no experience with this and all the knowledge I have is hearsay.

I think David quit the project long ago.
