Hi,

I suspended, BOINC the other day and forgot to unsuspend.
CPU time lost.

If there was a 'Suspend for x minutes', the client could restart itself and CP would not lose as much CPU time.

Dear Ma'ams and Sirs,

Mine is a little computer. 1.4 GHz Celeron. Laughing costs extra.

I suspend my Boinc when I need CPU power. Last night, I was running a virus scan, and my Boinc lost about 12 hours of computing time when I forgot to un-Suspend.

For me, it would be sufficient if the icon in the taskbar (near the clock) would change if Boinc is suspended.

An example of an icon that changes is Windows Messenger's. When signed out, there is a red circle covering the lower right quadrant of the icon -- hard to miss. I'd like the Boinc icon to do the same thing when it's suspended.

If there were a function for suspending Boinc for a number of minutes (as chosen on the fly by the user), that would be great, too. Still, the icon should reflect the suspension. It should be possible to cancel the timed suspension.

Thanks,
-Neil-

BOINC is a program written by Berkeley Uni in America.
If you want to suggest changes to it, you have to talk to them.
They also operate SETI, so their forums would possibly be a good place to post.

Dear Les,

> you have to talk to them.

I thought I was.

I guess you can imagine that with the ClimatePrediction homepage linking to three separate forums, there is every reason for the newbie to believe he is on the right track, whichever forum he chooses. (Or her.)

You can imagine my frustration, considering that the name of this forum is "Questions and Problems > Wish list."

Perhaps I misconstrue the intention of this forums existence. If this forum is a dead end for people with questions and problems, perhaps eliminating it would help to deflect people to one of the other ClimatePrediction forums and save a few man-hours in the process.

Therefore, my last wish would be for all of the administrators of the assorted ClimatePrediction forums to get together and consolidate into one location. As it stands now, this situation isn't working:

. Too much ambiguity; no guidance on the ClimatePrediction homepage which forum to choose; implied equality of forums which isn’t the case
. Apparently misleading forum names
. Assumedly duplicated efforts which would be better spent working together in harmony

I hope too much attitude hasn’t leaked through. That’s what happens to me when I find I’ve been pursuing a wild goose.

Anyway, maybe the administrators will see this and consider the difficulties of the present situation, especially for clueless newbies.

Happy crunching, Les.

Best luck,
-Neil-

Understand your point given the following is the written description of the "Wish List" forum...

<i>What features would you like to see in BOINC and climateprediction.net?</i>

If stickies were allowed in these forums (the latest version does, however, unfortunately the forum version here at cpdn does not allow stickies), at least there could be one posted with a link to the place where overall BOINC wishes would be most effectively proposed.

I'm afraid you're on the wrong track.
You can talk about BOINC issues anywhere you like on these forums.
However, this is climateprediction.net, NOT BOINC.
cp is at Oxford Uni in England, and BOINC is at Berkeley Uni In America.
Two different things.

<a href="http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/"> This</a> is the SETI site.
If you are serious about getting something changed in BOINC, this is where you should post.

As geophi says, the heading for this message board should be changed, and a link added to take people to Berkeley for BOINC issues.

A similar request was posted on the BOINC development mailing list recently, so the idea has at least gone into the melting pot.

Dear Thyme Lawn :) , Les, and Geophi:

Just wanted to thank you guys for your tolerance, and putting up with me. Who said men don't have hormone problems.

Also, it finally has gotten through my thick skull what Les was trying to tell me. Playing with the icon in the toolbar, creating a timed suspend function, etc., are Boinc concerns. I think I can remember that. I think I can I think I can

Stay cool.
