Right now I just installed it on a Win98 SE machine, with 384 RAM and a Duron processor. It seems to be running ok -- will I necessarily have problems later?

I\'m just wondering because the website here STILL claims that Win98 will work with Boinc/CP.Net

Somebody here told me that was not the case. If so, why? Why don\'t they update the system requirements?

Matthew

There have been many reports that the latest version of the CPDN client does not run on Win98 machines. What we don't know is whether anyone is successfully doing so (ie Hadsm3 v4.1x).

It got broken by accident, and the team have probably not had a chance to investigate it properly. But the word is that it is unlikely to be fixed. CPDN classic does run with Win98/ME.

There are certainly some machines getting credit. On May 3 2005

Operating System....., Number Machines, Total Credit
Microsoft Windows 98...896..............1,788,985

Currently
Microsoft Windows 98...971..............2,049,891

A 14.6% increase in total credit. In the same time Win XP credit has increased 19.9%. Unfortunately I don't know any way to find out how many models are completed on different OSs'.

There are only few problems with Win98/Boinc.
1. You have to exit Boinc before closing down Windows. A work around to make Boinc shut down gracefully is found at
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,8527446~reverse=0;days=30;root=seti;mode=full
that fixed my machine. Unzip the Defaul.zip file to the Windows Folder and it make it work right.

2. Do not use the option 'leave in memory' if you are attached to other projects. This will cause Boinc to try and crunch more than one WU at the same time. (This also means that you may have to increase the switching time between projects if the save points are to far apart. But I haven't had this problem for some time now.)

3. Depending on your system, some of the Screen Savers don't work. I've given up on mine.

Boinc V4.45
-WARNING ALPHA ver. have been known to BLOW UP your system.
AMD Duron Processor, 1.3G, 224MB - Win98se
Attached to Seti, Predictor, CPDN, Einstein, and LHC.

A further complication here is that Win98 machines tend to be older and slower on average. Some of those at least who are happily crunching will be doing do with 4.04 (or even 4.03) apps. The problems seem to have begun with v4.10.

In all 4.1x hadsm versions run on Win98 that I've looked at, the model will trickle once or twice, then error out and download a new model. So credits continue to acrue for some Win98 users, but I'd like to see a completed model on Win98 for a model downloaded after February. I do not think it has happened but would be pleased to be proved wrong.

My PIII Win 98, (not even SE),is happily crunching Einstein, using BOINC 4.45, and takes about a day to complete a WU.

Note! My other PIII Win Xp Pro SP2 took nearly 6 months to finish a CPDN model .... do NOT go there. LOL
