My Athlon XP 2100+ takes around 3,6 seconds per timestep, which seems rather slow compared to my laptop (a pentium M at 1.6 GHz) that takes 2,2 seconds.

Is this normal behaviour, are there optimized clients for AMD, is there anything I can do to speed up the Athlon XP?

For what it\'s worth, I\'m seeing the same thing. I believe it is due to the rather large L2 cache on the pentium-m. Athlons have 256kB (or 512kB on some models) while pentium-m have 2MB. I think this makes the difference.

Furthermore, the athlon is rated at \"2100\" which is roughly 1.7GHz. The rating is to compare with the pentium4 which while it has a high clock speed, actually does less than most CPUs per clock tick. The pentium-m is based on the pentiumpro arch and is fairly effective per clock tick.

The feeling out on the net is that pentium-m really does perform well on large number crunching applications due to the large cache.

So it\'s not so much a slow athlon, but my laptop is fast. Good to know, did not figure the cache was that large in a pentium-m. Thanks for the info...

Well, my Athlon XP 2000+ has average timestep of 5.4sec and Pentium M Dothan 1.7GHz has average timestep of 2.5sec. So your numbers are good compared to mine anyway. My models run on linux computers.

My Athlon has been doing 10 t/s per minute for two years. When cpdn started this seemed to be fairly average performance for ordinary mortals, but now people expect more. AFAIK the only way to really speed things up is O/C, but if I were you I\'d just be glad that both of the machines are stable. Sit back and let them get on with the job.

If your laptop is running for long periods, raise it slightly above the table to help keep it cool and prolong its life.
