Just installed BOINC 5.2.5 on a dual 2.5 PMac G5 running Tiger (10.4.3) yesterday and started two projects which are clicking along and downloading new work as needed.

This morning I added the Climate Prediction project and it downloaded two work units. Later today when those two units were finished, the results uploaded but no new work downloaded. In looking at the messages I see

Mon Nov 21 23:02:25 2005|climateprediction.net|Computation for result sulphur_aizk_000491168_0 finished
Mon Nov 21 23:02:26 2005|climateprediction.net|Deferring communication with project for 58 seconds

Mon Nov 21 23:03:26 2005|climateprediction.net|Reason: To fetch work
Mon Nov 21 23:03:26 2005|climateprediction.net|Requesting 86400 seconds of new work, and reporting 1 results
Mon Nov 21 23:03:31 2005|climateprediction.net|Scheduler request to http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc_cgi/cgi succeeded
Mon Nov 21 23:03:31 2005|climateprediction.net|Message from server: No work sent
Mon Nov 21 23:03:31 2005|climateprediction.net|Message from server: (reached daily quota of 2 results)
Mon Nov 21 23:03:31 2005|climateprediction.net|No work from project
Mon Nov 21 23:03:36 2005|climateprediction.net|Deferring communication with project for 20 hours, 53 minutes, and 13 seconds

Is the reason that they don\'t really need any more resources, they have a problem they are working on, or I have something set up wrong?

Thanks,
Lee C

All 9 of your models crashed before really starting.
If they really had finished, they would have taken a month or so each.
The quota is to prevent computers that crash a model quickly, from rapidly using up all the data sets available.

This project used to work on Macs when it started, but the latest models from Apple are different in some way, and cp no longer works on them.
However, the project has apparently acquired a modern Mac recently, and the situation will no doubt improve in the future, as they work on the problem.

At least one user is happily crunching away on a Mac Mini, so: some machines can, and some can\'t.

Thanks Less,

Well that certainly answers my question. A Mac Mini would likely be running Tiger as it is fairly recent hardware, but would not be a dual processor(?). And yes, if I\'d stopped to think your answer makes sense additionally because the first CP unit is still churning away on the XP PC I have on my LAN (was gathering dust otherwise :-)

BTY, is there a way to tie together the stats between my Mac account and my PC account and still have different preferences? (The PC is a single processor)

Thanks again,
Lee C

There are 3 possibilities for prefs: Home, Work, & School.
So you could use 2 of these for your 2 computers.
You just have to use the one account for all computers.

I\'ve only one machine, so I don\'t have any personal knowledge of how it will work, but there were posts from the days of BOINC 4.* saying it didn\'t work. At least for some people, some times.

There\'s no need to have separate venue preferences if the only difference you want is the number of processors. Just set the \"On multiprocessors, use at most\" preference to 2 and BOINC will run 2 science apps on the Mac and 1 on the PC.

If you have the systems running with different user names getting them on the same account is not so easy. As you haven\'t had much luck with the Mac it might be best to detach from CPDN, stop BOINC and copy over the account_climateprediction.net file from your PC.

Your failed results are generating the error message \"dyld: Library not loaded: /opt/ibmcmp/lib/libxlsmp.A.dylib\". The solution to this problem is detailed here, and you should follow that advice before restarting BOINC.

Ah. I was thinking about the word \"preferences\" in a different way.

Thyme,

First, thanks for the combined stats answer. Other than CP, I\'m quite happy with the way everything else is running on my Mac. So I guess I\'ll just have a go at resetting the lonely PC (even though CP is running there).

Your second point, though, about CP seems to be outdated if I didn\'t misread it. After reading your post I dug into Console and found the error message you note and I already have a \"/opt\" directory in which I created a directory named \"ibmcmp\" and in turn \"lib\" - so far so good. However, when I dig out \"hadsm3se_4.13_powerpc-apple-darwin.zip\" (no 4.12 there) it does not contain the dynamic libs listed in your reference. All it contains are \"gfx.sh,\" \"globe.rgb,\" \"hadsm3_gfx_4.13_powerpc-apple-darwin\" and \"hadsm3se_4.13_powerpc-apple-darwin\"
In fact, no where on my Mac (package, archive, hidden or otherwise) are there any files named \"libxlsmp.A.dylib\" \"libxlfmath.A.dylib\" and \"libxlf90.A.dylib\"
I also checked the CP site for a download of the files without success. I don\'t mind a little \"fix-it\" for them, but I can\'t manufacture the dynamic libraries out of thin air.

So I guess in the interim CP has made a change, but not for the better :-)

Thanks again,
Lee C

Thyme,

\"So I guess in the interim CP has made a change, but not for the better :-) \"

Take two Thyme. I\'m the dummy and I apologize CP :-)
I searched CPs site again, and this time I found where they had a special \"library\" download for Mac users. I downloaded and installed it and the noted dynamic libraries are now where the reference you gave me said to put them. So for the next person that asks the question, tell them to look in the CP FAQs where the answer is there for anyone that is not blind to find :-)

The reason I looked back again, though, is because I seem to remember reading somewhere that I shouldn\'t use the same account on two different types of computers (e.g. Mac and PC). I\'ll have to search some more to see if I can find what I think I remember.

Thanks again,
Lee C

It looks like the distribution method has changed Lee.

Have you downloaded the Mac OS application library? (The link is on the \"Client Download\" page).
