When I connect I see hadcm3 trans_5.08_windows_intel86.exe and transum_5.08_windows_intel86.exe running. The second takes up all my available CPU and causes overhating. Is this normal?

It is normal for both of them to run, and use 100% of the CPU.

Overheating is NOT normal. A CPU can run for years at 100% and never overheat (I have been running one of my machines nearly 24/7 with DC projects using 100% of my CPU for nearly 3 years and it has never overheated)

What causes overheating is your concern. Try and see if you need to clean the dust out of the fans, off the CPU heat sink, etc. Did you build the machine yourself, if so, did you use the right amount of paste to put the heatsink on, because to little or to much can cause this, also. If these do not help, it looks like it could be a fairly new system, and might still be under warrenty? If so, I would take it back and tell them to stress test it. You may have gotten a faulty processor.

Or is it one of the tiny boxes with no front and rear fan? (Power supply fan doesn\'t count.)
These need to be treated like a laptop, and given extra, external, cooling.

If it\'s out of warranty, adding fans (to a standard desktop / tower case) is relatively easy + cheap, find out the size of the fan holes pre-drilled in the case and get hold of a \'ball bearing ultraquiet fan\'. £ 2.50 mailorder... (delivery as usual costs more than the fan).
