Hi,

I´m using a 2x Dualcore AMD Opteron with 2,6GHZ.
My PC switch off by Chipsettemp 60° (not by CPUtemp)
4x CPDN by 2,6GHz Core is too much for my Chipset.
4x CPDN by 2,0GHz Core is stably.

changing CPU 100%->50% usage keep CPU cool, but not Chipset.
Using only 2 Cores cooling Chipset only 2°.

Is there an option in BOINC ?

The best thing to do is to sort out the PCs cooling, I added an extra 12cm fan to my Dell for example. You can get special fans just for the chipset.

Over Chipset was an 8cm FAN with 6000 U/min, it was very loud.
It´s not coolly enough to work with 2,6GHz

The Chipset-FAn work also with full power 5800 U/min

Try a bigger 10cm fan with a 10cm:8cm adaptor, it\'ll be a lot quieter and better cooling. The noise may indicate that the bearings are failing on the original fan.

A (very expensive) alternative is water cooling.

It seems odd that it\'s overheating (at 2.6GHz or any other speed), the chipset shouldn\'t really be affected by the processor speed because the CPU speed is isolated to the CPU. What is the speed of the HT bus? (HT shouldn\'t go over 1 GHz - i.e., 200x5, 250x4, etc).

Hi,
it´s not an chipset Problem, it´s a Project problem.
In other Projects (Spinhenge) run my PC with full Power 4x2,6GHz without an extra FAN for Chipset. Chipset ist 65° CPU´s 61° without any Problem´s. No Systemcrash, no switching off my PC.

I do not have notion, which that is

These projects cause the computer components to run continuously, when \'normally\' they would run intermittantly. This continuous running causes the chips to heat up more than normal.

It\'s possible that the heatsink/fan on the chipset isn\'t seated properly, and/or that it doesn\'t have any thermal grease.

That chipset temperature is much higher than it should be. For example my chipset is at 39c (AMD @ 2540MHz), whereas both CPU cores are at 57c. As Les says, most likely there\'s a fault with either the fan, the heatsink seating, or the thermal compound. I have a similar motherboard, the same chipset as yours, and the same CPU stepping (although mines a single X2 rather than a dual socket Opteron).

The climate model uses memory intensively, more than most projects, but it should be well within the normal limits of the computer.

Curious. Les might be right on target about the installation.

One of my A64 X2 4400+, on MSI K8N Neo4 MB, Northbridge fans got VERY noisy. At best, they\'re little screamers (6-7000+ RPM) and this one had to go. Spent some time on the Net seeking advice, which, not unexpectedly, covered the spectrum. Some of the advice was to simply unplug the thing and, optionally, remove the fan and leave the cheesy little heatsink. I unplugged it and left the fan in place.
Per Everest:
MB 37C, CPU 47C, Aux 31C, HD 31C on the box with chipset fan unplugged.
MB 36C, CPU 46C, Aux 29C, HD 38C on a similar box, for comparison; Northbridge fan was 6197 RPM.

I\'m not recommending unplugging fans. I did it only because of the recommendation and, besides, it\'d give me an excuse to convert this box to Intel C2D E6700 or Q6600 if it failed! (So far, it\'s run about half a year with the Northbridge fan unplugged; we\'ll see what the Summer brings...) This post is simply to highlight Les\' and Mike\'s thoughts

I do not understand, why CPDN falls with 60° and Spinhenge does not fall with 65°. Chipset-Fan I cleaned and paste changed, no change.

You have to be careful trusting motherboard temperature sensors. I\'ve had CPU\'s fail at 60C (but not fry). Generally, the cooler the better of course. I\'m not happy if anything in my computer is above 50C.

Did you put the heatsink on aftermarket or is that the way it came? Those tiny fans on the northbridge chip go frequently, it seems. I\'m on my 3rd one in 5 years.

One more obvious thing I didn\'t think of earlier. Do you have an exhaust fan on the back of the case? How about an in-flow fan on the side or front? If not, then maybe an additional fan would help evacuate all that hot air inside the case. One of my old cases lowered chip temperatures by 8C by adding an exhaust fan!
