I've posted some notes on the latest experiment using hadcm3n, here in the Science section.

Urgent

It appears that there's a setup problem with the "r" series of Hadcm3n models.
Please Abort any that are running, or which start to download.

All remaining have been removed from the queue, but re-sends will go on for some time.

The "s" series are OK.

edit
Oops. That should be hadcm3n.
Fixed the above.

Re. HadCM3s 'short' tasks for year 2007:

From staff:

. . . We have cancelled the outstanding hadcm3s 2007 workunits and contacted the scientist involved who is going to investigate the issue further.

Andy

Like the set Les noted above, this is another deprecated task-set and any in your Task list should be aborted. Same with any 'retreads' which might fall to your machine(s).

We'll surely see this batch again after the scientist fixes the problem.

New models just released for ANZ experiment looking at role of ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation) on recent extreme weather events in Australia.

There's a new batch of hadam3pm2 models for Linux only.
Andy has said that these have corrected run-time-estimates, and are the most important of the various models available to process.

Extrapolating somewhat from a Facebook link ...

6000 model runs released for the UCS CA drought project. Robert Mera will present results at AGU14!

... presumably describes the new PNW models that have just appeared.

In light of news that the project's front page server was under attack earlier, some reminders:

There are links in the Projects tab of the BOINC manager that lead to this forum, your account page, and a few others.

Also, of a post that I made in the middle of last year:

As part of the ongoing problems with attaching here, it's becoming obvious that there's a very important file on everyone's computer.

This is: account_climateprediction.net.xml
It has the information that the project needs to identify you.

Please make a copy (or several), and keep it in a safe place for when hardware problems occur.

Keeping the equivalent for ALL of your projects is a good idea for the same reason.

With this file, you can just drop it into a new install of BOINC, and the server for that project will know who you are.

There's a big new batch of hadcm3s now in the queue.
Hopefully not too many have built-in problems. :)

Found out the hard way:
The following no longer have applications for Linux:

UK Met Office HadAM3P-HadRM3P Pacific North West
UK Met Office HadAM3P-HadRM3P Australia New Zealand
UK Met Office HadCM3 short

I've sent an email, but it's the weekend.

An update to previous post:

The Linux application was removed from the mentioned models, so as to give the non Linux based computers a fair go at getting work.

The European regional models are now of two types:
1) The original yearly type, with a 1 in the model name for the run length, and
2) A new type: a variable length version, with a 0 in the model name for the run length.

The latter is hot off the beta assemble line, and is currently for 3 months.
On my Linux Haswell machine, these run for about 12 hours.
They have 3 zips of 12-13 Megs, and a 4th of just under 35 Megs.

Mac Only

The Version 7 applications on Mac have been a problem for a while in that they run successfully to completion, uploading intermediate Zips as required, but crashing right at the end. Those applications have now been withdrawn.

This leaves two Version 6 applications that still run on Mac:

UK Met Office HadAM3P-HadRM3P Australia New Zealand (6.10)
UK Met Office Coupled Model Full Resolution Ocean (6.07)

Note that the server status page has been tidied up. An old server name that had attracted some comment because it was reported as not running (because it had been retired) has been removed. A new server has been added, cpdnupload4.oerc, which is the ANZ server in Hobart.

The project will have some scheduled downtime on Thursday and Friday.

This is to allow the underlying hardware to be configured to accept a tape backup system as part of the 'near-line' storage.

Jonathan will be taking the opportunity to move the database backup to a different server, to give more resilience in case of hardware failures.

The downtime ought to be no more than a few hours on Thursday, but Jonathan does acknowledge that he's said that many times before!

All of the virtualised servers will be offline briefly:

  • climateprediction.net
  • trillionthtonne.net
  • climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk
  • cpdn-upload2.oerc.ox.ac.uk
  • cpdn-results2.oerc.ox.ac.uk
  • database server

Bumping this thread just as a reminder that the project will be down starting at about 0800 GMT Thursday Feb 5th, and the downtime may extend well into Friday the 6th.

From Jonathan "This means there will be no forum, and no scheduler/client access to the project.

Upload servers outside of Oxford will continue to function, but BOINC clients
will be unable to report changes in WU status."

The UK Met Office HadAM3P-HadRM3P Australia New Zealand application has been restricted to Mac-only for a period, in order to ensure that volunteers with Mac computers continue to have some work available.

Down time imminent

Database downtime 30 April 2015 07:00 - 12:00 GMT

Hi Chaps,

we have to take the database offline for a few hours tomorrow morning.

This should only take a few hours to fix, as it is re-syncing the database slave, not tinkering with the main database.

Apologies for the inconvenience.

I've made a new thread here, as this one is a bit too long for tablets and phones.
