Newly installed a fresh download on a Windows XP system, all looks fine. However, once the screensaver tries to run, I start getting problems... Actually, a couple of times, I got what I assume is the correct rotating-globe graphic for a second or two, but in every case, it ends up with a minimal \"BOINC Screensaver Shutting Down\" display, and errors in the message list.

Taking the latest occasion as an example - it apparently started running okay when I booted the computer:

However, once the screensaver cut in, the problems started:

02/05/2007 07:44:10|climateprediction.net|[error] hadcm3i not responding to screensaver, requesting exit
02/05/2007 07:44:13|climateprediction.net|[error] hadcm3i not responding to screensaver, killing it

This makes me wonder if the actual modelling process (\"hadcm3i\"?) is really running at all.

Any fixes for this?

Thanks,

The modelling process has nothing to do with the screen saver, which actually wastes cpu time.
There are two processes, which you can see in Windows Task Manager:
hadcm3transum...... (which does the crunching) and
hadcm3trans...... (and I forget what this doers, but it seldom uses cpu time)

The screensaver is a third process, and there are a couple of BOINC processes.
The lack of a screensaver may be due to your graphics card and/or it\'s driver. Updating the driver from the card maker\'s website may help, as may updating the DirectX driver.

Finally, your computer is only half the minimum recommended speed, so not using the screensaver will compensate for this a bit, as will waiting until a save (checkpoint) is reached before Exiting from the Manager, and turning off the computer.
There is a countdown timer for the checkpoints, which is visible in the display (click Show graphics) by pressing Z and then 8.

Both present and apparently running fine, along with the other stuff.

I think that I\'m fairly up-to-date on drivers. Anyway, the screen saver starts okay, and sometimes even flashes up a globe picture for a moment...

Okay, so I missed the system requirement... (I notice that the installation process didn\'t bother complaining.)

Currently, that gives \"Next savepoint 113\". How fast should it count down, roughly?

Many Thanks,

The display includes the average speed your model is running at (the bracketed s/TS value). It\'ll vary quite a bit at the start of your model. If you look closely you\'ll see 5 timesteps being completed quicker than the average followed by one that\'s significantly slower. That\'s because a timestep calculates the conditions in every model cell in isolation and every 6 timesteps the results are balanced between all adjacent cells.
