Ok, im new to this and i just discovered smth that completely denyes the information i read in FAQs. I have a dual core cpu and i run a slab model. After suspending all other tasks i realized that the model now uses both cores with 2 proceses: Hadsm3_5.06_windows_intelx86.exe and Hadsm3_um_5.06_windows_intelx86.exe. can any1 please give me abit of insight on the multithread capabilities of the models. And is there any way i can tell my boinc that i want to run only 1 model on both my cpu\'s instead of two models using 1 cpu each. And despite the fact that timesteps now take considerably less time, the cpu time is still being counted as usual. Can this effect anything, credits maybe? tnx :) |

Hi, The second process is displaying the graphics (and also performing post-processing, but this only happens a few times in the model\'s life). Particularly on a mothercore-integrated-graphics chipset, the graphics can take up to 50% of the CPU time. I\'d recommend not running the graphics if you can (i.e., disable the screensaver and only run the graphics briefly). I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. News and Announcements and FAQ |

It looks like you\'ve downloaded 3 models, 2 of which are still going. With a dual core CPU, you can limit BOINC and cpdn to running on only one core by going into \"Your account\", \"View or edit\" General Preferences, and changing the option \"On multiprocessors, use at most\" to 1 processor. But an individual model itself (the hadsm3_um process) is not multithreaded and will not use both cores. |

Whichever type of climate model you run, Hadcm coupled or Hadsm slab, you will receive almost equal numbers of credits for the CPU time your computer contributes. The best way to increase your credits is to disable the screensaver as Mike advises, and look at your globe occasionally using the View Graphics button in boinc manager. Then your model will run faster and earn more credits. More information about running these models can be found in the project READMEs. There\'s a link to them in my signature. Cpdn news |
