Hello,

I have a strange, maybe, situation here. I currently have a work unit that indicates that I have over 1659 hours remaining to complete. Is this normal? I have Q6600 quad core CPU with 3 Einstein units and 1 Climate unit running.

Thanks for your time,

Serge

Perfectly normal.

As explained on the various sections of the Climate Science pages (in the blue menu to the left of here), your computer is slowly creating a 3D model of the Earth\'s atmosphere and ocean.

The Atmosphere is calculated at half hour intervals, and the ocean at one hour intervals.
Horizontally, the planet is devided up into boxes,
The resolution is 2.5° in latitude by 3.75° in longitude.
,
and also vertically:
The model used in climateprediction.net has 19 vertical levels in the atmosphere (and 20 in the ocean).

Then, for each box, the values of anything up to several dozen different parameters need to be calculated, and then \"related\" to those in adjacent boxes.

If you look at the name of your model, it says ... 1920_160 ...
The first is the starting year, the last the number of years in the model. This one is the longest type on offer. (Apart from the 200 year \'spinups\' being run on a separate site.)

So climate models take a LONG time to create.

As Les says, the climate models are very demanding! There are different types of model, and they all take different amounts of CPU time, depending on the period of the simulation, and the resolution. Take a look at the first two posts in the \'information\' section of the \'running your model\' readme - the link is in my signature. These two posts describe the types of model available.

I'm a volunteer and my views are my own.

Hi,

Congratulations on only having 1659 hours to go on you model. I should be so lucky.I am 1000 hour in and have more than 2600 hours to go. Oh well I knew what I was getting into. On with the crunching.

Thank you all for taking time to answer my question. At least I know that everything is normal. ;)
