Message 33692 - Posted: 6 May 2008, 17:34:45 UTC

I just upgraded from release 5.10.13 to 5.10.45 and my screen saver changed from the \"graphics\" neat display to the Boinc Icon and underneath the icon it says:

Running Research for: \"project name\"
Application: \"project name\"
Workunit: xxxxxxx
nn% Completed...

Is there a way to get my \"neat looking graphs\" back?
Thanks. . .

We recommend that the Screen Saver be set to Blank in Windows. (CPDN Screen Saver burns a lot of the CPU resource.) Then, when you want to see the globe, use the option \"Show Graphics\" in the boinc Manager Tasks tab. (Click on the model to select it, then on \"Show Graphics\". Click \"Z\" to get rid of the overlay. \"H\" toggles options list on and off.) We do this only when we want to check things, because of the high overhead.

I`ve just recenty downloaded and joined climate prediction but the \"Show Graphics\" is not turned on. How do I get to select it?

Which BOINC version? If it\'s version 5, and you downloaded a model in the last few days, (which will be for version 6), then there\'s a backwards compatability problem with graphics, as described in this thread.

(menu)Suspending BOINC, (menu)Exiting Boinc, and then restarting, MAY make the button (and graphics) active.

John has a HADCM 160-year model version 5.44. I don\'t think these HADCMs suffer from the graphics problem discussed in that thread you linked to, Les.

John, if you\'ve just downloaded BOINC you\'ve probably got version 6.2.18. Check by right-clicking on the BOINC icon to the bottom right of your screen, then selecting About BOINC Manager. As Les said, you need to tell us the version number.

If you have in fact got BOINC 6.2.18, there were two installation modes offered by the install wizard:

1) the \'screensaver\'/unprotected mode. You get to this during the installation process by going to the wizard\'s advanced option. This \'screensaver\' mode allows version 5 models like yours to show their graphics in BOINC 6 versions. So if you selected this mode you should be able to click on the graphics button in the Tasks tab of your BOINC Manager. (But you\'ve said you can\'t.)

2) the default \'protected\' mode. This mode doesn\'t enable the graphics of version 5 models like the one you\'ve got. (This installation mode is probably what you got.)

When you\'ve told us your BOINC version number, and also if possible which mode you chose when you installed it, we\'ll be able to tell you what to do to get model graphics.

Thanks, that worked a treat.
And also thanks to the other gentlemen who gave their experienced help

Hi again John

Did Les\'s suggestion work to enable the graphics for the HADCM 5.44 model before you stopped running it? Or did you never see the graphics of that first model?

What I did was, uninstalled everything (Boinc etc) and reinstalled it all again. Rebooted the PC and everything worked.
The version I downloaded was: 6.2.18

It`s good to know that there are people out there willing to give up some of their time to help an old seadog.

Same here.... the neat graphics are gone. And I work with Boinc 5.10.28 and Windows XP Sp2 OS. I want the graphics back, but the button mentioned already here is not highlighted. That\'s not fun. Even if the computer\'s processor will have a shorter live span because of a (possible) overheating - science has to present itself way \"sexy\", or, to choose another word, attractive.
To left the 3D- Screensaver behind now, after some years running it, is not acceptable. At least not from the User\'s view; they have done nothing but contributed their idle time.
Think about it!
Best regards,
Gunnar

If you\'d read the News and Announcements regularly, (on ANY of the cpdn boards), and/or looked at other threads, you\'d know that there\'s a new version of BOINC.
This version 6 has features to get around the problems caused by Windows Vista\'s security measures.
And part of this is to separate the graphics component from the processing, so that if there\'s a failure in the graphics, the science application won\'t crash as well.
All 32 bit climate models are now version 6 compatable, and, while it was/is intended that the change should be backwards compatable with BOINC version 5.*, this doesn\'t work in all cases.
