Hi again, Marie.

I think you must have done everything right so far because you\'ve already got a climate model! Here it is.

So you\'ve attached to CPDN correctly and the project server has sent you this model. I expect your model is already processing its climate data and advancing through the model days.

I expect you have a BOINC icon in the task bar of your computer screen down at the bottom right-hand-side. The icon looks like a cross with a fried egg in the middle. If you double-click on the eggy icon a page called the BOINC Manager will open up. You can click on its Tasks tab and should then see your model listed. You can then click on the Show Graphics button and see the globe of your model. After looking at the globe you can click X to close the graphics window.

Can you do all that? And in the Tasks window can you tell us what % it says in the Progress column?

(Just make sure you don\'t accidentally click the Abort or Reset buttons because that would delete your model and you\'d have to start a different one.)

Hello its me again I am so sorry I have so many questions once I get into the hang of things everything should be fine. In Bionic manager options I am supposed to have a default connection to the internet right? And I put my default connection but why does the computer keep telling mr that its not? am I doing something wrong. It says that I cant connect with other computers or something. And how do I look at and send info. also I\'ve been wanting to do something like this all my life. How do I know when a task is complete? Also it said it can not find http file what is that? really I\'m fairly new to the computer.

Hi Marie

Don\'t worry about questions. This whole Distributed Computing business can be confusing and daunting at first.

There shouldn\'t normally be any messages about default connections. This is all taken care of by the BOINC software, which uses whatever it finds on your computer when you first start it.
So the fact that it IS asking means there is a problem, but only something minor.
Do you have a dial up modem? I\'ll wait until you reply before going further.
(Actually there\'s lots of people who are available to \'drop in and help\')

As for reaching the end of a task/model, the remaining data will be uploaded, and BOINC will request another one.

*****************

Let\'s start with some basics. Which may also help other people new to the project.

There are several types of model, which operate differently.
The one that you\'re running, a Coupled Ocean model, sends back small amounts of science data once per model year, on about the 4th of December. (This may/will vary, depending on which model day the program is up to when your computer gets connected to the internet.) You can see the current day/month/year by clicking the Show graphics button in the Tasks tab of your BOINC manager.
(Also, there are 2 options not mentioned in the list activated by pressing H: Z, which removes/displays the overlay on the left, and 8, which displays/removes a countdown timer. This timer shows you when the program is getting ready to save the data.

While in your manager, it\'s usally a good idea to go into the Projects tab, click the line showing the project name, and then click No more tasks. This will stop you from getting a new model if something goes wrong with your current one, and allow you to recover the current model from a backup. (Info in the link in my signature below.)

You can see the various types of model available by looking in the 3rd preference option on your account page. (climateprediction.net preferences) This is where you can select which type you get, by ticking one of them.
You won\'t be able to get the last type because your computer doesn\'t have enough memory. In fact it would be a good idea to add some more anyway, as it\'s running with the bare minimum to allow the computer to even work, let alone run something as big as these climate models. 512 Megs, or even 1Gig of ram will make your computer operate much better.

Enough for now. (But there\'s lots of info available by looking through the READMEs, also linked from my signature.)

Have you turned the computer off since you looked at your model globe graphics? If so I expect the BOINC program will have exited and its fried egg icon will have disappeared from the Task bar (bottom right of screen).

If the icon has disappeared, click Start, then on Programs. BOINC should be in your list of programs. Click on it. The eggy icon should come back.

By the way, when you shut down or restart the computer it\'s a very very good idea to exit from BOINC first. Otherwise the Windows shutdown process could sooner or later crash the model. To exit from BOINC

* In BOINC Manager Tasks tab, select the model and press the Suspend button.
* Also in BOINC Manager, click File then Exit. Or else right-click on the eggy BOINC icon and select Exit.

Each time you restart the computer you may have to get BOINC going again through Start > Programs > BOINC. Then go into BOINC Manager, and in the Tasks tab press the Resume button to get the model going again as well.

Let us know whether that works and you can see your BOINC and your model again.

Try to reply in this same forum thread so we\'ll know where to look for your answer. To the bottom left of my post click on \'Reply to this thread\' and an empty box will appear for you to write in. (If you click on Reply to the bottom right, all the previous post will be quoted and you\'d probably want to delete that before writing what you want to say.)

If you want you could save this thread\'s web page in your Favourites. Then you\'d just need to click on your Favourites link and you\'d jump straight back to this page.

Yes, I did shut my computer down yestureday because of a bad storm. But the egg is still at the bottom of my screen. But the timer on the task tab hasent ran since 6:00pm nor has thje disk space moved since that time. However I did what you told me to do and it\'s still not working nor can I see the graphics because its gone invisible. What should I do now? However these are seperate questions compared to the previous, I just want a heads up incase it does work again. how come before when it was working the computer saidhttp not found.and keeps saying acces site failed because of no default connection.and says it can not communicate with other computers, So then I did advanced/ options/ connections to set a default press ok and it still says the same thing. and also says no general prefrences found using bionic default. It will also say check proxy configuration and I put proxy both on and off and says the samething for both then it will say access to refrence site failed. all this happened before the timer stopped and now its not working at all. And on disik space what should I have it on? right now I have it on 200 mb should I have it lower or what do you think is specified. And another thing to ask is I cant understand half the things I read throughout the whole web-site Becvause I have attention deficite dissorder and if you are able to explain things to me in detail I would be grateful.

Let\'s take this a bit at a time. In your BOINC Manager Tasks tab, what does it say for the model in the Status column?

And what % does it say under Progress?

STATUES SAYS READY TO REPORT, PROGRESS SAYS 100.000%. nOW THAT i SEE THAT NOW MAYBE i CAN SEND IT BUT IT WOULD NOT SEND EARLIER. IT SAYS SENDING SCHEDUALER REQUEST-REPORTING 0 COMPLETED TASKS. THEN SAYS MESSAGE FROM SERVER- NO WORK SENT AND NOW i HAVE THE PROJECT ON BUT IT IS GONE FROM TASKS.

Hi again Marie

That means your first model has completed and a little while later it reported back to the server. You now need a new model to get started on.

Could you please check 2 things if you haven\'t already got a new model in your Boinc Manager tasks window.

* In your Boinc Manager Activity menu, is the black dot beside either \'Network activity according to preferences\' or \'Network activity always available\'? If the dot is beside \'Network activity suspended\', your computer won\'t be able to contact the Climate Prediction project server to download a new model. You\'d need to select one of the options that say \'available\'.

* In your Boinc Manager Projects section, what does it say for Climate Prediction in the Status column?

The black dot is on run always and network activity always available. first the project said schedualer request in progress and now 1 min later it says communication deferred00:... So does this mean things are going fine so far. Without a model right this moment everything else as far as the other questions are doing fine at the moment . I just dont know if all those other things will come up again when I do get a new model. Like the http proxy and not being able to connect with server or is it supposed to fail more often for now. So should I worry about anything at this moment or should I wait and see if anything else comes up that needs answering to. However when do you think I will get a new model. and why does it say sending schedual request: to fetch requesting work 30204 seconds of work reporting 0 completed tasks. dosent that mean I have completed a task or is it a bunch of different models for just 1 task. Thank you much

Hi Marie

These messages mean your computer can\'t connect properly to the project server which is in Oxford UK. Or it can sometimes connect but for some reason can\'t download a new model.

Couldn\'t resolve host name means your internet connection wasn\'t working or was turned off when your BOINC tried to connect to the Oxford server.

Could you please tell us what sort of internet connection you have. We already know it\'s dial-up. Have you got your own direct internet connection? Or does your connection use a proxy (server)? In schools, colleges and companies the computers sometimes have their internet connection through a proxy.

Good afternoon, although the internet was\'nt running at that time, does that mean that it will connect as soon as I get back onto the internet? However, I am fairly new to the computer. I have never worked on a computer until feb. of this year. So the only thing I can tell you about the internet connection is its through AOL(America Online) and its dail up from my home. When I go into Boinc manager I go to Advanced/options/Http proxy. Then I check connect via Http proxy-name.net port 80. I have done this with proxy on and it off. and it has said the same thing for both. I just put it back on again so we\'ll see what happens. Thank you much! I have the http proxy on and now it says schedular request failed: http not found. I\'m soorry but each time I find something new I just edit this paper each time i get on I f you havent replied yet. however, now the message says couldnt resolve proxy name. So I probably put the wrong address in it. So are you able to help me with this thank you much.

Try the proxy without \"http://\", just the IP number (or the proxy name)

Hi Marie

Your posts and some of the replies from members are in four different \'threads\' which means \'forum pages\'. This happened because when you first joined you didn\'t know your way around. Now of course you do.

I would like to move all your posts and the replies to them into this thread. Then it will be easier for us to check everything you\'ve said. I won\'t do this until you\'ve said this is OK. So can I do this please?
