Yes, this is exactly the right place and I\'m going to move your other posts from other areas of the forum to here now.

Edit: I\'ve done this now, so everything\'s here in date order.

I think it would be useful if we know what your general preferences are. We need to see what they say so you\'ll need to copy them here for us. Here\'s how to do it.

See the blue menu to the left of this page?

Click on Taking part in CPDN.

Click on Your account. A page called Your account will open up.

In the Preferences section, click on Computing Preferences. That will open up your general preferences page.

Hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse down over the whole page. The whole page of these preferences should now be highlighted, a dark colour.

At the top of your screen click on either Page, then Copy or Edit then Copy (depending on whether your Windows shows you Page or Edit)

Start a new post here.

Click on Page then Paste or Edit then Paste.

That page of preferences should now be in your post.

Click on Post reply.

See whether you can do that. There\'s no rush. If you don\'t get it right first time you can try again.

Hi Marie

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you.

I think one of the settings there is wrong. Your page says

Computer is connected to the Internet about every
(Leave blank or 0 if always connected.
BOINC will try to maintain at least this much work.) 0 days

I don\'t think that should say zero because you are probably not always connectd to the internet.

At the bottom of that same page click on Edit preferences.

On the editing page change that 0 to 0.1

At the bottom of the editing page click Update preferences.

You will be told that this has been done. You can close that window.

Make sure you\'re now connected to the internet.

In your BOINC Manager open the Projects tab.

Highlight (click on) Climateprediction. Click the Update button.

We will see whether you then get a new model.

Hello I have done what you told me to do and it is still saying the same thing. Is there anything else you could help me with? I dont know much about a computer but is there anyway I could start over. or go step by step to figure out whats going on. Because if this isnt going to work then I will have to stop doing something that I would really like to do. Thank you much

Hi Marie

Mo is away for a while, possibly until next week.
It seems that you still haven\'t received a new model.
It guess that it\'s still the connecting to the internet that\'s the problem.

Next thing to try:
Turn off the computer, and turn it back on again.
Then open the Manager, by clicking on the yellow icon at the bottom right of the screen.
Across the top of Manager, (2nd line up), there\'s a line of what we call \"tabs\", each with a little symbol to the left of the label.
Click on the Messages tab.

In the main part, there\'ll be a lot of lines of text, saying what the manager has done since you turned on the computer.
On the left are 2 \'buttons\'. The top one says: Copy all messages
Click this.
Now come back here, click the Post to thread button at the top left, click on the blank window that opens up, and then do a paste into the window. (Control V).

This will put a copy of all of the lines of text from the messages window onto this page.
Then click the Post reply button.

we know about the -1073741819 error. We\'re trying to fix a different problem.

Marie

There are 2 things to do next:
1) I think that you should get rid of the preferences override file. It\'s limiting your amount of memory too far, and you have little enough as it is.
One of the other settings may also be what\'s stopping your internet access.
So:

Open the Manager again, and look at the top line of text.
Click on Advanced
Click on Preferences
Click the Clear button in the top right hand corner.
Finally, click the OK button at the bottom.

Now shut down BOINC, but this time we will do it properly as long as you already have the Manager open. (Just turning off the computer can cause the model to fail. Once you have one.)

At the left hand end of the line of text, you\'ll see File
Click on this.
Click on Exit.
NOW turn off the computer, then back on again, and copy all of the messages once more and paste them here.

Once I\'ve seen any changes, I\'ll talk to you about the 2nd thing, which is trying to force the Manager to talk to the cpdn project.

This next part is simpler. Just open the manager, and click on the first tab labelled Projects.
Click on the line of text which goes right across. One of the words will be climateprediction.net
Click on the button to the left which says Update

Now go to the Messages tab, and watch the messages. It should start trying to call the project.
Wait about 5 minutes. Not important to be exact, just give it a bit of time.

Finally, repeat what you\'ve been doing to copy the messages.
(Click Copy all messages, and paste them here.)

DON\'T turn off the computer this time.

Hi Marie

From your last posting, it seems that the Manager IS capable of trying to call the project, but is not getting out.

This may be due to a setting in your computer regarding your modem.
So, next to look at is manually dialling up to the internet instead of letting the Manager do it.

How have you been doing this when you want to use the internet, for instance to post a mssage here?
By clicking on a symble on the computer?
If so, please do this, wait until you have a connection, and THEN try clicking the Update button.

Or does your computer dial up for you when you turn it on, and then stay connected?
In which case the problem is something else.

I think that we\'re out of the easy things to check.

Click on the word start at the bottom left of the screen.
You\'ll get a window with 2 columns. In the right hand column, about half way down, it should say Control Panel. Click this.

This should open another window.
At the botom right of this, it will, hopefully, say Security Center.
Click this.

In this 3rd window, there will be 3 horizontal colored bars. The top (blue) bar should have Firewall at the left hand end, and either On or Off at the right hand on. Hopefully it says On!
Just past which ever it is, there will be a circle with a double arrow, pointing either up or down.
You need it to point up, so click it if it isn\'t.
This should give you a short message, telling you the name of the firewall program. If it\'s Windows, there\'s nothing els to check, but if it\'s some other program, then I\'ll need to know what it is.

You can then click the white X in the red square at the top right of the 2 open windows, which will close them.

I\'ll wait until I hear from you again.

This is all rather strange. You\'ve had access in the past, because you received a model, but now it doesn\'t work.
These programs should just install and run, without all of this messing around.

I\'m going to have to think about this.
