INCREASED STABILITY ON WINDOWS 7?

Hi, Everyone: I have been running Windows 7 (first the beta and now the release candidate) since they first became available and I’ve noticed something. The models seem much more stable under Windows 7 than they did using Vista. When I was using Vista I hardly ever got through a model with it crashing and being restored at least once. The only thing that saved me was lots of backups. Since installing Windows 7 I have had hardly a crash. The computer hardware hasn’t changed. This increased stability seems to hold true regardless of the type of WU. While most of the models that I have benn running have been HadAM3p’s, I also finished a HadCM3 and a HadSMmh. Both seemed more stable. Has anyone else noticed this? I also wonder if Intel chips running HadSM’s on Windows 7 are less likely to produce ice worlds???? |

Hi, Everyone: I have run several models on My Vista Computer and havent had any unstability issues. I think I had one ice world but thats about it. Rick  |

I also wonder if Intel chips running HadSM’s on Windows 7 are less likely to produce ice worlds????On Windows 2000, XP and Vista I've had very few unexplained crashes - but lots of iceworlds. I'm running exclusively HADSM3MH at the moment to try to catch iceworlds in an attempt to find the cause (in which effort there is some progress). My impression is that the HADSM3MH models have entered a slightly more benign region of parameter space, as my iceworld production line is producing nothing but finishers. Grrrr. There are reproducible differences in iceworld behaviour across Intel chips, but none that I've found across Windows versions. That may, of course, change with Windows 7 ... A good test would be to restore a backup of a model that crashed previously and check whether it also crashes in Windows 7. PS If anyone wants to help find the cause of iceworlds then send me the '.cpdn' file just before the freeze, from a graphics recording. You don't have to watch the graphics or leave them running! The file is easy to spot, as it's the last normal-sized file before they start shrinking.
