You need to apply the fix in this thread. When that's been done, post back here and the host will be re-enabled.

Note that you need to follow the same procedure each time BOINC is upgraded in order to fix the permissions again. In other words, the upgrade must be done between models (unless you fix the group membership manually).

Thanks, Kent. Your machine should now be reactivated. However, there isn't actually any new work at the moment, so you may not get anything immediately.

Dear Christina Carey
Your computer (host # 1154484) described below appears to have a misconfigured BOINC
installation and is crashing models. Would you please have a look at it?

If you need assistance, please post in this thread on our BOINC forums and we will suggest a way to fix the problem. You may post in any language:

http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=6880

Please include this link so that we may more easily find your computer:

http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=1154484

When you have applied the fix please post to say so. Until the problem is fixed no more work will be sent to your computer.

Sincerely,
The climateprediction.net team

Christina,

Your tasks have been failing with messages like the following:
execl(/Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/climateprediction.net/hadam3p_eu_um_6.09_i686-apple-darwin, 163830) failed!
execl(/Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/climateprediction.net/hadrm3p_eu_um_6.09_i686-apple-darwin, 163830) failed!
execl(/Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/climateprediction.net/hadam3p_pnw_um_6.09_i686-apple-darwin, 182380) failed!
execl(/Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/climateprediction.net/hadrm3p_pnw_um_6.09_i686-apple-darwin, 182380) failed!
execl(/Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/climateprediction.net/hadam3p_saf_um_6.09_i686-apple-darwin, 178280) failed!
execl(/Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/climateprediction.net/hadrm3p_saf_um_6.09_i686-apple-darwin, 178280) failed!
execl(/Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/climateprediction.net/hadcm3n_um_6.07_i686-apple-darwin, 138105) failed!

That means you've been hit by the Mac upgrade permissions problem described in this thread. You should detach (remove) CPDN and reattach as described in that thread. Alternatively you could try manually deleting those files; BOINC will automatically regenerate them from the zip files with the correct permissions.

When you've done that please post back and the project team will re-enable work for your computer.

This process will have to be performed every time you upgrade BOINC to fix the permissions again.

I'm a pretty big noob when it comes to the BOINC client. All I wanted to do was donate my computer to some research.

Looks like all tasks are failing, some of the recent ones, all the other tasks in the work unit have also failed for others. this is due to a problem discussed elsewhere on this board but means that even if the units had got past the first 200 seconds or so they wouldn't have completed. Do you have any other software running at the same time that might cause problems? I am wondering if it is that your cpu is too old and is missing some of the instruction sets needed for the latest models?

All of CPDN's current applications can only be run by processors which support SSE2. The Athlon XP 1800+ doesn't and that's causing every task sent to your computer to crash (the "SIGILL: illegal instruction" lines which are visible when you expand the stderr for its tasks indicate that the CPU couldn't run an SSE2 instruction).

Unfortunately for you it's very unlikely that future applications will remove the SSE2 requirement so I'm afraid the only advice I can offer is to detach the computer from CPDN and concentrate its efforts on your other chosen projects.

As requested I'm posting here to say the problem with http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=1194257 is fixed (or should be). I formated the hard drive and put a new image on it.

Sorry it was causing an issue

Graeme,

All of your computer's tasks were failing immediately with a "too many exit(0)s" error and no CPU time. That suggests something on your system (anti virus?) was preventing the project applications from running, so reinstalling it might not have fixed the problem.

If you haven't already done so please check your private messages.

On your linux box you need to install some 32 bit libraries or the tasks will keep failing. Go to one of the models that failed, click the +stderr and look at the error messages to find the relevant libraries. I couldn't get the stand alone version of BOINC to run on this machine without doing that and I couldn't get the package manager's version to work at all, though installing it did install some dependencies that stopped the other one from working! The package manager version worked first time on my netbook which has Kubuntu rather than ubuntu on it but I am not going to be brave enough to assert that is the reason!

Oh and if you keep hitting the post button while waiting your message gets posted multiple times. ( I have done this too a while ago.

@Androidd

This is difficult. Most of the many early failures were likely due to you running a 64 bit version of your Linux OS (Ubuntu I gather) and not having the necessary 32 bit compatibility libraries installed, per this sticky. The stderr messages for those failed tasks had:
<core_client_version>6.10.17</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
process exited with code 2 (0x2, -254)
</message>
<stderr_txt>
sched_setscheduler: Operation not permitted
execv: No such file or directory

</stderr_txt>
]]>

Later failures had this stderr message which complains about libstdc++
<core_client_version>6.10.17</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
process exited with code 127 (0x7f, -129)
</message>
<stderr_txt>
../../projects/climateprediction.net/hadam3p_eu_6.09_i686-pc-linux-gnu: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

</stderr_txt>
]]>

You may want to make sure all the compatibility libraries are installed per my linked sticky, remove the entire boinc directory (however you may do that, through a package manager if that's the way you installed it), and then reinstall.

Hi,

I have received notification of crashing models on one of my machines. I see the following in the stderr of the failed jobs

<core_client_version>6.12.35</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
process exited with code 22 (0x16, -234)
</message>
<stderr_txt>
execv: No such file or directory

</stderr_txt>
]]>

I see from this forum that this may be due to 32bit libraries not being installed. This server is a 64bit linux server so I guess this could be the case. However how do I find out what is missing so that I can install the correct library?

Thanks
