CPU usage too high? I\'ve never seen that before. Do I have some settings wrong?

Annoying, isn\'t it?

It\'s a new setting: in BOINC Manager Preferences | processor usage set the \"while processor usage is less than\" setting to 0. Then things should revert to to normal.

Message 41107 - Posted: 20 Nov 2010, 14:06:34 UTC

I am getting the same error. I downloaded and started running BOINC 6.10.58 yesterday. After about an hour Windows (Vista) died in a way I had not seen before. I was able to restart, and it ran, apparently OK, for about two hours. Unfortunately I decided to run it for a time on the battery, and without taking into account the extra processing I ran the battery down completely. Since restarting from that, the process has not been able to get going properly. It will run for about a minute and then stop, claiming CPU usage is too high. However I had it on all night with no other active processes, and in the morning the Elapsed Time was the same as it had been the previous evening.

I went into Preferences as suggested, but couldn't find the "while processor usage" option. Instead I changed the maximum CPU usage option from 100% to 80% but that doesn't seem to have made any difference.

I have also had a Visual Fortran run-time error 38 in a program xaakm.pipe_dummy. The error message is hanging, so I cannot cut and paste it.

Can somebody suggest what has happened and how I can fix this?

Dear Chris:

To find the setting that you are looking for click “Your Account” in the Boinc Manager page and then click “Your Account” again in the blue box on the left hand side of the Page. Then click the “Computer Preferences” section. The setting you are looking for is the 6th one down from the top; “Suspend work if the CPU usage is above”. Set this to “0”. This should fix the problem.

3 CPU => BOINC 0% et 100% climatprediction@home

3 CPU => BOINC 25% et 33%(1 CPU) ou 66% (2 CPU)

l'utilisation du processeur

25% = par défaut.

Permet des programmes externes à prendre en charge plus facilement.

I'm afraid it did not make a difference. I reset it to 0 in the way suggested, but am still getting a minute or so of processing, then it being suspended as CPU processing was too high. Once again there was nothing else running at the time. All this time the Elapsed Time has varied between 42 and 44 minutes.

Since the problems started after I inadvertently let the battery run down, is it worth me uninstalling and reinstalling, then restarting the process (and leaving the power on). In which case how do I do a restart?

Chris

There are 2 places that contain preferences:

1) On the web sites of projects. This is the original location, and prefs set up here affect ALL of your computers.

2) In the menu of the BOINC manager, on each computer. This is a more recent addition, and prefs set up here only affect THAT computer.

The prefs set up in 2) override those on the project's site.
Initially, the override file containing these prefs doesn't exist.
It gets created the moment you wander around in the menu, looking at what's there. Wander into the prefs area, and exit by clicking on the OK button, and the file gets created, with all of the default settings.
The correct way to exit without creating these pref settings, is to click the X at the top right, or by clicking the Cancel button.

And to get rid of the file, go into the prefs again, click the Clear button and then X.

********************************

Reinstalling most likely won't help, as it's not a faulty installation, just faulty using.

********************************

As to restarting models, this can only be done if they still exist in the Tasks tab. In which case, BOINC will do this itself.
Otherwise the model is gone for good.
Unless you have a backup from before the problem. See my post here for info about this.

Chris
I thought that there was something else to tell you, and I've finally remembered what it was:

In your prefs on the project's web site, under Computing preferences, is the following setting:

Suspend work while computer is on battery power?

Please make sure that it's set to Yes, so that BOINC doesn't run with out mains power.

Can you please explain where the Clear button is in the preferences. I can't see it on the Preferences page of the BOINC Manager.

Top right hand corner, just below the X.

Sorry, I was looking at the Simple rather than the Advanced display.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have made any difference. These are the messages from when the preferences were cleared, and immediately after.

It continues in that vein indefinitely, and the project has made no progress, elapsed time continuing to vary between 42 and 46 minutes.

Though the suspension level above states 25%, presumably that message is there because it is resetting to the default. However I had already updated My Account on the website to 0. Just to be on the safe side I re-edited that to 0 again, but that doesn't seem to change things.

Have you any other suggestions?

Try Exiting from BOINC, and then restarting.
If the Messages still say that it's limited to 25%, then you have to work out why.
It should only be there because that's what your web site prefs say.

**********************

For ref:

On the web site:
Alter prefs
Click Update preferences button at the bottom of the page.

In the Manager's Project's tab:
Click on the project name to select it
Click on the Update button so that BOINC will look at the Project pages

There will not necessarily be a Message about the changes made. Only if you Exit from BOINC and then restart it.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but it all seems to be working. I exited, restarted, and clicked on the Update button within the preferences page. Since then the elapsed time has been steadily increasing and there have been no new messages for two hours.

Thankyou for your help. I hope to be able to leave you in peace now.
