Message 39550 - Posted: 15 Apr 2010, 1:55:32 UTC

I succesfully attached this second pc to the project but CPDN diddn`t download the software and wus. When pressing update or reset I got the above message and `Check your settings on the website`.
I changed twice the selections of wu types and ended removing the separate preferences for this computer thus adopting settings that are already working on my prime pc, but got the same message.

Is there any problem with the project right now (and so I`d just have to wait a little) or do I have to change something?

Thanks for any help,

Eduardo

Hi, Byron, I had the HADAM3 selected and then I followed your suggestion and selected HADSM3, updated the preferences and the Client: it didn`t work, I`m still w/o any work and notice that I didn`t even got the download of the CPDN softwares!

When I attached my prime computer to the CPDN Project, the software download started imediately, in the same way SETI does. It started so fast that I didn`t even had time to set the CPDN preferences and this is why I`m running 3 HADSM3 wus. So, maybe there is something wrong or not compatible.

In the past, CPDN was not compatible with dual core. Is this still a concern?

As you can see in the site, I run an Acer laptop w/ Athlon 64 x2 QL64 2.1GHz with 3GB ram, Windows 7. (My prime pc is a i7 and it`s runnung CPDN just fine!)

I had selected the HADAM3 due to the 1.5Gb Ram required, because I want to make use of the available memory I have, 6 and 3 Gb, while SETI uses only up to 100Mb per cpu.

If you have any information or whatever I should try, please tell me.

Thanks,

Eduardo

CPDN has been compatible with dual-core machines from the onset -- even the pre-boinc version, which ran fine on hyper-threaded P-4 machines. It runs fine on Quads and, now, on 8-core I7 CPUs.

Multiple copies of HadAM3/HadAM3P step on each other, slowing all involved. I tried it in Beta on my laptop -- once. A good mix on a dual core box is a HadAM3 with a Slab (HadSM3).

What else runs on the laptop? Which version of boinc? --> It makes a difference in download behavior. (I\'ve had trouble downloading Beta work with 6.10.18 -- necessitating suspension of main site work usually in \"Waiting to run\" state as backup to Beta work. Whereas my machines in 6.2.19 don\'t suffer that restriction.)

Please keep your laptop elevated to allow maximum air circulation; they need all the help they can get ...

... I didn`t even got the download of the CPDN softwares ...

That\'s not a problem. The program(s) will only download as part of the model, IF you don\'t already have the current version, and ONLY for the type of model that you get.

The list and number of the currently available models can be seen by clicking on Server Status in the blue menu to the left.
Also viewable there (under Applications), is the types of Applications and their current version.

Neither of these show hadam3p as being available.
These models are only available in batches for the previous year, and as required by the physicists running that experiment.

So your problem is elsewhere.

edit
Bother. It\'s the hadam3 models that aren\'t available.
The hadam3p models ARE available.
And more FAMOUS models before too long, it\'s hoped.

For a while, there was a question and self-answer thread on BOINC/dev, which may explain your problem.

************************

Thread: Why BOINC 6.10.43 will not download work for project

Q:
And this single active project has no tasks on host.
That is, BOINC sits idle, but refuse to ask for work. Why?

A:
Answer was simple, CPU work fetch disabled for project.

I found the problem: I didn`t have set the location for each computer and as soon as I set it the client and the site knew what to do and the softwares and wus download started!

Thank everybody I checked out everything you`d suggested and the elimination process conducted me to check every step from the begining again and that was it.

So I consider my original question answered but I have 2 additional ones and I don\'t know if I should post it in a new thread but here they come:

After updating the BOINC do 6.10.43, all my 3 computers eventually suspend computation and write the message \"Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high\", despite my laptops cpu usage are set top 60% of the time (for heat control). This started after 6.10.43 updating while running just SETI, before I started to crunch for CPDN also. 1)Why is that and 2)Is there anithing I shall do to fix it?

Thanks everybody again,

Eduardo

Is this still true? If so, how to I configure a client to select a different model for each processor/core?

Thanks

yes.

Sheer hard work.
You need to set the number of processors available to BOINC, which is done via the 1st of the 3 preference groups on your project account.

e.g.
Set it to one.
Allow a certain type of model to download. (Model type is set in the 3rd of the 3 prefs.)
Change the model type.
Set the number of processors to 2.
Download a model.
etc.

In fact, it may be best to set the number of processors to one and leave it there. Then there will be minimal interference with other work.
