BOINC 6.10.58 soft-crashes on WinXP even though plenty of memory (RAM & ROM) and cpu availability.

I say "soft-crash" because I hear an error "boing!" from the system (but no error dialog pop-up) and then I realize that there appears to still be running (Status = Running), but actually there is no progress (Progress % is stalled) and the task manager shows little or no cpu activity. I have let this run for a few hours with no other apps running and still no progress.

If I reboot, however, and re-launch BOINC (the only project is ClimatePrediction.net), then it runs again. However, when I launch other apps (particularly Firefox, I again hear the Boing! error alert, but still no diagnostic pop-up.

I am running WinXP with 2 Gb RAM and with over 1Gb free and this still occurs even with low cpu activity, although it typically occurs after a period of high cpu activity.

So far, the only way to resume is to reboot the PC and relaunch BOINC, but then the problem resurfaces later.

Is there a debug mode or some way to find out what is happening? Remember, the status panel shows it apparently working normally, only it isn't.

In 6.10.30 and above, there are a couple BOINC computing preferences that can make it act differently than the previous defaults. I've changed mine to:

Computing allowed
--- Only after computer has been idle "0" minutes
--- While processor usage is less than "0" percent

The defaults upon installation of these newer BOINC versions is 5 and 25 and this is not desirable for the way I want BOINC to work.

This can be changed on your Computing Preferences part of Your Account page, or in BOINC Manager itself under

Advanced
-- Preferences
---- Processor Usage tab.
