I am new to BOINC and it seems to running fine. However I can't switch off my computer. I have learned from this forum how to suspend and exit BOINC but I can't then shut down which I usually do after every session of internet banking. Also there are mornings when I am unable to open any browser - either Internet Explorer or Google Chrome. The only way to solve this is to shut down and then reboot. Catch 22 therefore. I have to crash out by holding down the "On" button.
I'm not a techie so any advice needs to be of the "all User" variety please.

Hi Virginia

I've found the climateprediction web page with the details of your computer.

Yes, before you shut down the computer exit completely from Boinc first. One way is to right-click on the Boinc icon down at the bottom right of the screen and in the menu that opens up select Exit.

I see your computer has XP. To shut it down click on the Start button in the bottom left corner. In the menu that opens up click on Shut down. A little window should open up giving you a choice in its drop-down menu of

Shut down
Log off Virginia (or your name on the computer)
Restart
Standby

Choose Shut down. That should be all you need to do. You shouldn't need to press the computer's on/off button to shut down the computer except in an emergency.

Does that work or not?

If you can't open up Internet Explorer or Google Chrome don't shut down the computer by holding down the on/off button if you can possibly help it. Do the shutdown as I said above using the Start button.

When you can't open IE or Chrome what happens? Do you see another page with a message?

Have you got your Windows updates? Have you got a firewall and Anti-virus program on this computer?

Perhaps your problem "... unable to open any browser ..." simply means that BOINC is making your computer slow to respond.

One way that I use, is to move the mouse around for a few seconds to "get BOINC's attention", then click on the program that I want to use.

There's also an option, both in the Computing preferences part of your Account page on the project, and also in the Preferences section of your BOINC manager. (But only in the advanced view.)

This option is: Suspend work while computer is in use?
If you click on this to make it active, there's another option to select the amount of time that the computer should wait after you finish using it, before BOINC will start running. The default is 3 minutes.

One thing to note for new users, is that BOINC is designed to use spare processor time. This means, for instance, that people who use their computer intensively and then turn it off, will not get very far with any science projects, and perhaps nowhere with this climate project.

The trick to at least progressing a little bit each time, is to look at the graphics display (click the Show graphics button in the Tasks tab), and wait until the count down timer has reached zero, then a little bit longer until it starts counting again after returning to the maximum value.
This will mean that the climate model has had it's data saved at that point. (A check point.) THEN turn off the computer.

Then, the next time that you start the computer, the model will start again from that new point. Otherwise, you may simply be re-starting the model from the same point for weeks.
