Hi!

I joined climateprediction.net and installed the BOINC software few days ago. Since then the status (tila) of the project has been something like "Communication postponed" (by an hour or so) or "Yhteytt? lyk?tty" in Finish. I suppose it is not a firewall problem as the software has been able to retrieve computer (ID: 1174311) specifications and other information by itself. What can I do?

The problem is that most of the time the project has no work available. After every unsuccessful attempt to get new work the BOINC manager suspends further requests for 1 hour to prevent the computer from wasting excessive amounts of time and bandwidth begging for new work.

It also helps spread any available work out between all the different computers so that large multi-core machines don?t hog all the work.

There isn't much work available on the cpdn site at the moment. If you look at the server status page there are no tasks ready to send this morning. It sounds like your host is doing as expected in the circumstances - asking for work, getting none - so it sits and waits patiently for an hour before asking again.

These climate models are very CPU intensive, be prepared for some of the longest work-units run by distributed computing users. On a fast machine - the shortest model types take a week or so to run, and current CM3 models take about a month running 24/7.

Worse than all of this, though, is that your computer doesn't have nearly enough memory for these massive models. (They use the same programs that the UK Met Office runs on their supercomputers.)

And it's possible that your Celeron based processor doesn't have SSE2 capability. Without this, all models will crash in a few seconds.

Ah yes, Les is right, nowhere near enough memory, although a Celeron D should support SSE2 it will be relatively slow compared to newer processors and those with more cache. In summary, Juha, the host won't be suitable, as is, for running these climate models.
