This section is supposed to be used for 'fine-tuning' how the forum works for members. Fine-tuning the software of such an ancient forum version may or may not be possible. I just want mine to work roughly as I intend.

In my account message board preferences I have the post order within threads set to Oldest post first, and that works. I've also selected 'Jump to first new post in thread automatically'. But this doesn't happen. Threads open at the oldest post at the top and in long threads I have to trawl down to find what's been added since my last visit.

Does this facility work for other members?

Just changed my settings.

edit
Still oldest first.
Might have to wait for someone besides me to post to get a "new" post.

I have the same settings in community preferences, and mine jumps to the first unread post in a long thread.

The 'newest post' is at the bottom, and at the top is the oldest post.
My usual setting is 'Newest post first'.

I'll wait until there's a new post in a long thread to see what happens.

OK, it's working as advertised.

With Oldest post first, a thread will stay at the top if there's no new posts, (oldest post at the top), but jump right down to the bottom if there's a new post (newest post at the bottom).

Yes, that's how it works and that's what I expected. It's working for me now but it definitely wasn't a couple of days ago. Strange...

Something does seem strange.
I've got "newest" set at the top for posts and replys.
And set to open at the newest

For threads I've already read it seems to do that, but if I go to a thread I've never read, it always goes to the bottom....at least that's what I'm seeing, and I have to scroll to the top.

That's 'normal'. If you haven't opened a thread, then all of the posts are "unread". This also happens after X amount of time since you last looked looked at that thread.
The later can be a problem if you're following a link, as the thread will need to open all the way to the start, and you'll go past the post that was linked to.
