I think I have my preferences set correctly. I selected all the different types of work, but nothing is ever downloaded to work on. I try manually updating but communications are always deferred for 1 hour.

Hello Loushon

There's only 2 apps that currently have work for Linux. You can check this at any time on the Server Status page, 5th from the bottom in the blue menu to the left.

And if you're running 64 bit Linux, then you need some 32 bit libraries, as per the original post in the thread about this at the top of the Linux section of this board. (Currently the top thread.)

The "one hour project back off" is designed to slow down rogue computers from grabbing and crashing large quantities of data sets.
ANY contact with the server will reset this timer.

Finally, the exact message that you're getting in the Event Log should tell you why your computer's not getting work. Perhaps it already has enough from your other projects.

It is 64 bit Linux, and I'm set to accept all projects, but I don't think I have too much work, because currently there is only Seti running anything. I am not sure what you mean by 32 bit libraries, though.

Perhaps it is my Linux set up since I just set up boinc on my windows pc & it downloaded work right away.

I am not sure what you mean by 32 bit libraries, though.

The climate models are provided by the UK Met Office, and they're all 32 bit.
If you don't have the needed 32 bit stuff, then a 64 bit computer will crash all data sets in about 6 seconds.

The fix is described in the afore mentioned post.

Is there a line in your Event Log that says something like:
"Not requesting work. Don't need." ?
If so, then BOINC thinks that your computer has enough to do already.

Just checked, the computer in question hasn't received any work yet. However it is shown as last contact with the project being today.

Go the the afore mentioned post and follow the instructions to install the 32 bit libraries. The fact that you don't know what is meant by them on a 64 bit installations pretty much guarantees you don't have them. - I can remember when my own knowledge of linux meant it took me a long time and a lot of reading to find all the answers. On this occasion others have done the work for us!

Check the notices tab and also the event log which is under the advanced tab as I suspect there will be a clue there as to what the problem is, probably a message saying tasks of some sort not available for your computer. Not 100% sure but I think installing the missing libraries will fix this. If not I can probably find my post about what I think is the problem given some time.

Does anyone have any idea when more work will be available for Windows. I have enough to keep my cores feed for a week or so, but, after that

There is work in Beta but we have no idea when it will be operational and ready for release.

I finished a 32 days task on my Linux box,. Now I have 3 Anz jobs on my Windows PC. One is running together with ATLAS@home and vLHC tasks and two were suspended by me in order not to stop the tasks requiring VirtualBox. So I have plenty of CPDN work on the Windows PC.

Though if they are all HADCM3S tasks it may be worth checking if any of the workunits these tasks come from are marked, "No resubmission" One of mine that finished yesterday failed at the end with missing zips was I realised so indicated and on checking so were a number of others that had also missed an earlier cull.

Not sure if this means they were marked after my my earlier checking or not. This will soon leave me with just the longer tasks to crunch on my two Linux boxes.

I see that there is a brand spanking new batch of hadcm3s tasks on their first time around the block.I just successfully downloaded 7. And what do you know, they arent no resubmissions.

Yes, they are looking good thus far for me, with the first 4 running 8 to 11 hours with no problems.

I am working with climateprediction.net and SETI@home on a 13" Early 2015 MacBook Air running MacOS Sierra Version 10.12.1. For a while both programs were running tasks. For the past several weeks only SETI is running tasks. I'm not aware of having changed any settings. Why is climateprediction.net running tasks?

Any suggestions for changes in settings I might make?

Hi Michael

That's because there isn't any work at present. And it may be a while before there's more.
Or in five minutes time. :)

You can keep an eye on this in the Server Status page. There's a button for this on the projects front page, and in the blue menu to the left, 5 from the bottom.

If there were a reliable & consistent supply of CPN WUs I'd dedicate some cores to CPN.

There was a time all work was generated by in-house research at Oxford. L-O-N-G global models (they covered 140 years) starting about the time CPDN joined the then-new boinc. Now, work is generated by research teams around the globe, for their own region, and typically run for mere model-months. Oxford organizes, tests, releases, and coordinates everything, including credit, et al.

That is a long, historic, way of saying our work now tends to come in peaks and valleys -- peaks during research-university semesters and valleys between. I've been with the project since the 'Original Beta' and still consider it my primary interest, despite the sometimes wide 'valleys'. In the intervals, my machines are gladly offered to other worthy research.

Hang in with us, Aurum, we have much more to do. Who knows, the 'pick on your shoulder' might open an insight to a climate researcher's questions.

This has been addressed in several threads in the number crunching section

Small Windows batch went out last week but they went as quickly as they were loaded onto the server. The batch currently being set up to go out is for Linux. I don't know what the time frame is for the next Windows batch but am guessing it won't be all that long as Windows batches have at least in the past been more common than Linux/Mac work.

Until a big batch comes along, you will have to be lucky with the timing of your work requests on your computer. Also do not hit the update button for the project when your manager is showing that it is on backoff for an hour as this will just start the hour again.

Edit: Also said before, work is done on behalf of researchers all around the world, these days it is not generated by those at Oxford. However I suspect the current dearth is because some batches are taking longer than normal to get out because of the complexity of generating the work units.

Paulie

Quite apart from recently answering your post about this same matter in your thread here Why no new projects to run?, your computer is crashing just about everything that's been sent to it, so it isn't being of much help.
Either fix the problem, or leave the climate models to the thousands of computers that CAN run them successfully.

So to sum up (I think) most of the previous messages in this thread, what you are saying is WUs are available in a feast-and-famine fashion, and it depends on who generated the WUs as to what platform they will run on?

For example, right now, there are 2082 WUs waiting, but I haven't seen a WU on my PC for months - ergo, these are WUs for platforms other that Win10?

If that is correct, it would be useful if you could split that out on the Server Status page, as it's very frustrating/annoying to see WUs waiting and not receiving any to process.

While I appreciate you might not want to do it for obvious reasons, it would also be useful if you could publish rolling figures on how many WUs for each platform you have put out for each platform in the previous 365 days, so that your supporters can properly manage their expectations.
