I have been hoping that someone in the know would post and tell us what happened last Friday. Why did the site go down? I assume that the extended duration of the outage was caused by the inability to get access to the Server Room over the weekend.

It was part of the ongoing upgrade, started a week or so earlier.
It involved re-syncing servers, which take a long time, and is best done when the servers are inactive.
