Another problem I've been having lately on Windows 7 machines:

I have been using Firefox each time. Once, I had suspended computation while I watched a movie on Netflix. The other times just surfing while the models were running. Twice it has crashed several models and, like today, I've had to resort to backups. A couple of other times I've gotten the messages but the models have seemed unaffected.

Any comments, suggestions?

The VF errors are caused by the computer doing something that causes the main climate program to fail. It then issues a message of what it was doing at the time. Because this program is written in Visual FORTRAN, the error is labelled as such.

Yes, Les, but are these errors common? I don't remember having had them occur previously on my machines. Certainly not to the extent that they've been happening lately anyway, but maybe old age is catching up on me.

Apparently the errors don't show on service installs of BOINC - they fail silently. Which makes it hard to tell how often.

I never had them in all the years that I ran Windows, and I haven't had any strange failures on my service install Linux.

If they happen more frequently now, then it may be necessary to work out what changed at the point where these failures suddenly increased. Which may not be easy to do.

If I wasn't so comfortably invested in Firefox's accoutrements I'd try using Chrome for a while to see how that went, but I'm probably too lazy to set it up. The Ubuntu machine hasn't had any of these errors so far.

Prior to 2011 I was running service installs too, but since I've been using GPUs for crunching I had to switch. It's only in the past two or three months that I've been getting these errors. Probably something to do with the unevenness of the MS/Mozilla update process as MS updates often seem detrimental to Firefox stability and/or performance. Think I'll just wait and see if it sorts itself out.

I started getting them about a week ago for the first time on my Win7-64 laptop. After a few days running other projects, a new Climate Prediction task loaded and ran and immediately started throwing up the errors. I aborted it and reset the project, but it happened again with the next CP task, upon which I suspended the project to regain the use of the computer. All other projects run quite happily.

I probably had both Firefox and Chrome open at the time, but that's usual.

I might possibly have a workaround if you're interested. The problem just recurred again but this time, instead of clicking on the OK button in the error message, I suspended computation in the manager and exited BOINC. That closed the error message along with the manager. Then I rebooted, restarted BOINC, and resumed computation. So far no model has crashed and all seem to be running normally. Hopefully they will continue that way. I'll let you know if otherwise.
