Windows and Mac crunchers are just going to have to be patient until the people from those projects need more data for whatever they're researching. Then they'll start submitting a big batch of data sets directly to the server download queues. And there has been testing for new models/areas over the same several weeks. When the bugs in those get fixed, they'll increase the likely hood of more work. |

The work laptop suffered another hard drive failure earlier this year. Unfortunately, I have given up on re-loading cpdn due to a clamp-down on the use of non-business software since the replacement hard drive was re-imaged. That's the new rules from CIO, so 'cease and desist' is the order of the day. The home cpdn host will sit patiently until new work becomes available. It's picked up a few days of Einstein to keep the host usefully occupied ... |

There is I am told lots of Windows work in the pipeline awaiting all services being restored after the recent planned outage. |

Any idea when all the services will be back up. [/quote] |

There's a series of short children's programs from the UK called Pepper Pig. In one of them, the family is on their way to the playground, when they come across Mr Bull and his team, who are digging up the road to replace a broken pipe. When Pepper asks him how long it will take, he replies: "It will take as long as it takes." In regard to when the services here will all be restored, the answer is: "It will take as long as it takes." :) |

I see why tasks are Windows or linux, but what makes a task Window or Linux only? I mean there have been a lot of Windows "outages." Are there corresponding Linux droughts that I'm just not seeing (because I am not looking for those)? Or are the bigger projects preferentially doing Linux for some reason? |

Hello Chris I think that the matter of which model type for which OS was an arbitrary one, decided at some level in the OeRC group. And it was at a time when there was still plenty of work for all OSs. The current dearth is due to no work being sort from the external-to-Oxford research groups recently, due to the extended project down time. This is expected to change before too much longer. And as mentioned in a thread somewhere a few weeks back, it appears that the soon to start new projects will be Windows only. Not sure about for the Mac, but there are less of them than there are Linux machines. The large number of Linux apps available, is due to the lesser number of Linux machines, and the lack of work for Windows is due to the huge number of Windows machines, which can grab a batch of 10,000-20,000 in a few days. I've thought of a similarly there, but I'll refrain. :) |

And just for the record, there have been times when there have been long breaks in the supply of work for penguin powered machines. |

I suspect this will also appear in the news and announcements thread. Due to the beta site being down some test work units are going to be released here and this may result in a higher failure rate. They aren't there yet at least according to the server status page but at least we know they are on the way. I still have a couple of beta site tasks running and zip files for completed tasks to send there so probably won't pick up any of them myself. Don't know what platforms they are going to be released for. |

I've just picked up about a dozen of these. They are AFR models. I also had some short repeats that had failed on other machines. These have completed OK. |

Great that these haven't gone to a set and forget cruncher! Any feedback re actual time as opposed to estimated time, size of zip files etc will I am sure be welcomed by the team at Oxford. |

Also picked one AFR generated today. This week I also picked and finished some "Shorts" that were abandoned by other people :-) Professor Desty Nova Researching Karma the Hard Way |

While I know these testing units are comming, what I can't tell is whether these AFR tasks are part of that or are part of an ordinary release that are getting snapped up as quickly as they appear. I also see that server status is showing 1,000 eu tasks at the moment so some of those waiting at least will see some work soon! |

Welcome to the world of beta testing Ed. :) What was the specific failure? e.g. I've just had some checksum failures on the Linux stuff. When I first looked, there was a bit over 2.5 thousand of them. There's now 2.6+ thousand, so the batch is being loaded even as we post. |
